Thursday night I lost power.
Friday after working until my laptop battery was almost flat. I shoveled all the wet heavy snow and raked my roof. We heated rocks on the stove to keep the lizard warm enough. We got take out from a local place that had power. That evening I went and picked up a generator from my in-laws and spent until 1 am working on getting it running again with no success.
Saturday morning I got up and found the last bit of gunk inside the generator’s carb and got it running.

Then I ran a couple extension cords into the house and got the lizard’s lights, run that fridge and charge up some devices. Then I went to Lowes to get supplies to get the generator hooked to the house. I had to go back to Lowes and also go to Home Depot to get everything I needed. Also hit the grocery store. I wore a mask and washed my hands a lot but it was still nerve wracking being out. I was not able to get everything hooked up for the generator. I wanted to do the final wiring after I had slept so I didn’t screw anything up. We were able to cook some Easter eggs and dye them. Yay for gas stoves.
Sunday we did an egg hunt and I finished up the wiring for the generator, mounted the inline power box and hooked the generator up to the house. It powered everything but the furnace.

A couple hours after I got it all hooked up the power was restored to our house so I turned off the generator and unhooked everything and took a shower. We did not have the Easter dinner we planned as it was late and the rolls alone would take 2 hours.

Our little generator is just enough to power the fridge, a fan, a light, the TV and cable box. After hurricane Gustav, we lived like that for two weeks. As you said, yay for gas stoves. Although, in our case, it was a propane camp stove.

I can run our fridge on an inverter I have, so in a pinch I could run that off one of our cars (or in the winter, batteries from the boat that live in the basement). A generator is awfully tempting though. I ran an extra line through the conduit to my shed when I put that in last year, so I could open the window in the shed and run the generator out there.
Come to think of it, last Easter we had water coming in our basement. It’s supposed to rain 1-2 inches today so.... *fingers crossed?*

Man, that’s a rough weekend! Sounds like you made the best of it though. Figures that as soon as you got it hooked up, the power would come back on!

You can cook a lot on those camping stoves if you need to. That sounds like your generator can power the essentials.

It was super handy for us and mostly for Jerrold. If I could get the furnace to work we could live off the generator for awhile.

Yeah I was kinda hoping that getting the generator would be like going to the bathroom and the waitress delivers your food. It was a lot of work but we’ve got the hook up for when we do loose power again because it’s definitely a case of when and not if.

Now I’m left to wonder how pet stores are dealing with the animals they can’t sell right now. Years ago I was at some god awful place and their lizards were all piled on top of each other trying to stay warm under one poorly-placed heat lamp.

Ugh sounds rough. I’ve had that finally got it running and then the power comes on fiasco before not fun.
But hey you took care of business and it wasn’t a disaster.
If you can't be handsome you better be handy!

That makes me sad. I hate to look at the lizards in stores because of how they are cared for but they are so cute. I imagine some breeders are stacking up babies somewhere.

It sucks but it’s work that will benefit us later so it’s not all bad. Plus I get to impress everyone with my mad skills, and I really had nothing better to do.
